Getting Cable Ties Right
Always leave 3–5mm of tail after trimming a cable tie for a professional finish. For outdoor use, choose UV-resistant black nylon cable ties rated for your temperature range. Stainless steel ties should be used in marine, high-heat, or corrosive environments.
Shop Cable TiesPerfect Heatshrink Every Time
Always use heatshrink that is 20–30% larger than your cable diameter before shrinking. Apply heat evenly using a heat gun — avoid open flame. Start from the centre and work outward to prevent air bubbles and uneven shrinkage.

Select a cable gland one size up from your cable's outer diameter for best sealing. For SWA cables ensure the armour clamp is tight before tightening the compression nut. Always use a locknut on the panel side for a secure, vibration-resistant fit.

Strip wire to the exact ferrule sleeve length — no more, no less. Use a ratchet crimping tool for consistent, reliable connections. Always insert the ferrule fully into the terminal before tightening. Colour-code ferrules by wire cross-section for easy identification.

Always label cables before routing through conduit or trunking — nearly impossible to re-label once installed. Use heatshrink markers or cable tie markers at both ends of every cable run. For permanent installations consider engraved or Traffolyte labels.

Print heatshrink markers using a thermal printer for crisp, long-lasting identification. Slide the marker over the cable BEFORE terminating the end — you cannot slide it over a lug or connector once fitted. Use the correct sleeve diameter for a snug fit after shrinking.
