Cable Ferrules, Lugs & Terminals
The termination is where most cable faults start, so it's worth getting the crimp right. Our copper lugs are SABS IEC 61238 tested and run from 1.5mm² to 630mm², alongside XLPE lugs and ferrules for high-voltage power cable terminations and jointing. For panel and control wiring, insulated bootlace ferrules are colour-coded by size to DIN standards, and pre-insulated terminals follow the usual convention — red for 0.5–1.5mm², blue for 1.5–2.5mm², yellow for 4–6mm². Aluminium terminals and sectorial ferrules are stocked for aluminium conductor work.

Lugs or ferrules — which do you need?
The two words get used interchangeably on site, but they do different jobs. A lug has a barrel at one end and a flat palm with a stud hole at the other, so it lands a conductor onto a busbar, breaker or earth stud — which is why every lug size below is listed against a stud size. A ferrule is a plain barrel with no palm. It either joins two conductor ends together, which is what the XLPE and aluminium ferrules are for, or it gathers a stranded conductor into a single solid pin so it can be clamped in a terminal, which is what bootlace ferrules do.
Insulated and non-insulated ferrules
Bootlace ferrules are the insulated type — a metal barrel with a moulded plastic collar over the wire entry, colour-coded by conductor size to DIN 46228 so the size can be read at a glance on inspection. We stock them from 0.5mm² to 16mm², in single entry and in twin entry for two conductors landing in one terminal. Where no collar is wanted, or the conductor is far larger than panel wiring, the copper flat pins and ferrules run bare from 1.5mm² to 630mm², with XLPE ferrules from 35mm² and sectorial aluminium ferrules from 25mm² for jointing work.
Reading the colour code
Bootlace ferrule colours follow DIN 46228, so the colour is a reliable guide to conductor size: white 0.5mm², grey 0.75, pink 1.0, red 1.5, black 2.5, blue 4.0, yellow 6.0, green 10.0 and orange 16.0. Pre-insulated terminals use a separate and much coarser convention — red for 0.5–1.5mm², blue for 1.5–2.5mm² and yellow for 4–6mm² — so the two colour systems are not interchangeable. Barrel lengths and inside diameters for both are in the sizing tables above.
Common questions about ferrules & lugs
- What is a ferrule connector?
- On control and panel wiring it almost always means a bootlace ferrule: a barrel crimped onto the end of a stranded conductor so it enters a screw or spring terminal as one solid pin instead of loose strands. On power cable the same word is used for a jointing ferrule, a barrel crimped over two conductor ends to join them. Both are stocked.
- What is the difference between insulated and non-insulated ferrules?
- An insulated ferrule has a moulded plastic collar over the wire entry; a non-insulated one is the bare barrel on its own. The insulated bootlace ferrules run from 0.5mm² to 16mm² and are colour-coded to DIN 46228. The non-insulated copper flat pins and ferrules cover a far wider range, 1.5mm² to 630mm².
- What size ferrule do I need?
- Size it to the conductor cross-section in mm², not to the terminal. The bootlace ferrule table above gives the wire range, barrel length and inside diameter for every colour from 0.5mm² to 16mm². Where two conductors land in one terminal there is a twin-entry size for that.
- Are your cable lugs tested?
- The copper lugs are SABS IEC 61238 tested across the full range, 1.5mm² to 630mm², in tinned and untinned.
- Do you supply lugs and ferrules for aluminium conductors?
- Yes. Aluminium terminals from 16mm² to 300mm² for terminating, and sectorial aluminium ferrules from 25mm² to 300mm² for jointing.
